FIELD NOTES: World Photo Day was August 19 and Instagram was one way to support Korske Ara's 2009 idea to “unite local and global communities in a worldwide celebration of photography.”
The date behind World Photo Day originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic processes developed by Joseph Nicèphore Nièpce and Louis Daguerre in 1837. On January 9, 1839, The French Academy of Sciences announced the daguerreotype process. A few months later, on August 19, 1839, the French government purchased the patent and announced the invention as a gift "Free to the World". It's already known how hashtagging allows a user to join the next big internet thing, or just be specific which community to connect with. A quick look at a few months of #lasvegasstreetart on Instagram shows a growing exchange between locals showing off city walls and out-of-towners looking for them, often by following the locals. Here are a few for a World Photo Day 2015.
